Decontamination System: Is It Really Better than Filtration System?

Filtration system is used in most of air purifier products in the market. Decontamination system, on the other hand, is more common to those working closely in hospital environment.

The need of air purifier products significantly rose during this pandemic. The promises of providing clean air, removing dust and odor, and killing viruses and bacteria are the main selling points of those products. Before we dive deeper into those promises, let’s see how filtration system works.

To put it simply, air purifier products that use filtration system work by sucking in the air and other particles suspended in it. The air and the other particles will then go through the High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filter, holding off particles larger than 0.3 micron. The machine will then channel out the resulted cleaner air.

Now, let’s talk about the promises. Can filtration system clean the air? Can it remove dust and odour? Can it kill viruses and bacteria?

For question number one, it depends on how you define “clean air”. It is true that the air leaving the machine is of better quality compared to the air going in. However, particles smaller than 0.3 microns in size can still go through the HEPA Filter and go back out in the open along with the air. So, if you’re okay with that definition of “clean air”, then the answer is yes, filtration system can clear the air.

Question number two; can it remove dust and odor?

The answer will be more or less the same with question one. If the dust and odor particles are larger than the 0.3 micron, then they will be trapped in the HEPA Filter. Smaller particles, however, will go back out in the open.

Question number three; can it kill viruses and bacteria?

Generally, no, HEPA Filter cannot kill viruses and bacteria. Again, viruses and bacteria that are larger than 0.3 micron in size will be trapped in the filter but it won’t be killed. They will be dead in a matter of hours or maybe even days but the filter itself will not actively kill them. Viruses and bacteria smaller than 0.3 micron will most likely be able to go through the filter and go back out of the machine.

Decontamination system works differently. It focuses on releasing decontamination agents that are capable of removing viruses and bacteria. Aerosafe recently introduced two decontamination devices namely Aerosafe Portable and Aerosafe Mini. Both devices offer Ozone and Negative Ion technology inside with additional Food-grade Hydrogen Peroxide and HEPA Filter in Aerosafe Portable.

Aerosafe combined those components based on extensive international researches. Not only that, they also made sure of the effectiveness and the safety of their products by sending it to reputable institutions for testing processes. Both products passed the IEC 60601-1:2014 verification tests held by SUCOFINDO, proving that Aerosafe Mini and Aerosafe Portable both meet the technical standards for the safety and essential performance of medical electrical equipment.

As for Aerosafe Mini and Aerosafe Portable’s effectiveness against bacteria, Saraswanti Laboratory was chosen to run a series of tests for the products. Aerosafe Mini is capable of removing 98.3% of Escherichia Coli bacteria and 97.9% of Staphylococus Aureus bacteria in just one minute. Meanwhile, Aerosafe Portable can kill 99.7% Escherichia Coli and 99% Staphylococus Aureus bacteria within the same period of time.

Based on the simple explanation above, are you sure that the conventional filtration system is capable of handling current air problems? If you are really concerned with the air quality around you, then you should choose hospital-grade decontamination system instead as it is capable of giving you continuous protection against viruses and bacteria.
